What are the symptoms of oesophageal cancer?
Many people who have the early stages of oesophageal cancer do not have any symptoms, so it is often not picked up until the later stages.When symptoms occur, they can include:pain or difficulty with swallowing or choking when you swallowgetting food stuck in your throat or coming back uppersistent heartburn or refluxpain in the upper part of your belly when you eata persistent cough or hoarse voice.
What is the current oesophageal cancer testing process?
Currently, you need to have a specialist endoscopy-biopsy procedure to get a diagnosis. In this procedure, doctors pass a tube down your throat to examine your oesophagus and collect a sample of tissue for testing. This is costly and invasive.
Can a blood test detect oesophagus cancer?
The oesophageal health test is a non-invasive blood test for the detection of oesophageal cancer. It identifies 4 biomarkers in the blood that are linked with this type of cancer, then combines this with age and BMI data to calculate a risk score. Research has shown that it accurately detects oesophageal adenocarcinoma in 94% of cases.
Am I eligible for the test?
To be eligible, you must not have had a prior cancer diagnosis. You also need to have at least two risk factors for oesophageal adenocarcinoma, including:heartburn or chronic reflux (also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GORD)age > 50 yearsoverweight (BMI > 25 kg/m2).
